When I look out the window, do I want to sustain what I see? Hell no.
Turn on the news. Pay attention to what is being reported (and what is not). Pay attention to these man-made disasters happening more frequently: wildfires, floods, heat domes. And don't overlook the lives lost, the economic impact, the public health crises.
Is that the world I want to sustain?
The current idea of "sustainability" simply maintains the status-quo within our planetary boundaries. It doesn't change the systems that caused this clusterfuck. Sustainability only flatlines where we are now.
So yes, we need to stop our inappropriate, greedy, selfish behavior. But, stopping isn't enough. We need to heal the damage we've caused.
One of the many things I learned in the RegenIntel Fellowship is that "sustainability isn't sustainable".
We need a regeneration mindset, one that actively restores, renews, and revitalizes our natural environment and socioeconomic structures. We need to shift from extractive to regenerative. To find solutions with cascading positive benefits across social, environmental, and economic challenges (and uplift marginalized communities while doing so).
What I'd like to see out my window is the hard work of healing, re-nourishing, and righting the wrongs we've inflicted on ourselves and our natural world.
Let's open up our perspective on what work needs doing. This will be hard, but it will also be so very rewarding.
What would you like to see out of your window?
